about

'Play Sport and Operate Machinery' is a collection of improvisations for prepared piano by pianist and composer Johnny Richards. Using a selection of household items attached to the strings (including screws, papers, old records, glass jars and a pebble) Johnny replaces the original sound of the piano with mellow chimes, ominous scrapes and scratches, plucked strings and percussive hits. The album takes inspiration from a wide range of music including Aphex Twin's music for prepared piano, the soundtrack from the film ‘The Conversation’ and contemporary improvisers Matthew Bourne and Craig Taborn. With these preparations the normal approach to playing the instrument changes. Johnny explores these different sounds and influences through a series of melodic themes and textural pieces allowing the altered tones and tunings of the pianos to guide the improvisations.
